JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY Reviews insurance applications to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Based upon company underwriting guidelines established and underwriting authority granted, the individual will examine documents such as application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, past claims, and financial reports to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, business operations, loss experience, and value and condition of property, vehicles, inventory, and equipment.
" Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline risks. " Establishes types and limits of coverage to be provided. " Determines if reinsurance is needed on a policy and place reinsurance per underwriting authority granted. " Calculates rates and premium charges by using approved rating methods. " Reviews state laws and filing requirements within their assigned territory to properly transact business within a state. " Develops or modifies policy wording as approved by their manager when standard text is not appropriate. " Monitors the amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks, and evaluates possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance. " Consults with insurance agents, or brokers, and other insurance or inspection companies to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting guidelines. " Manage an assigned underwriting territory. Responsible for production, profitability and relationship with agents in that territory, including travel to that territory. " Assist in the development of special programs, underwriting procedures and educational seminars. " Assist junior underwriters with risk analysis and authorization. " Train junior underwriters in various underwriting responsibilities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or twenty years related insurance experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPCU, IIA or other insurance related classes recommended. A minimum of fifteen years experience in an underwriting position is a requisite. Excess and Surplus lines background is beneficial.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of agents or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
